Spring ORC Week 2- Picking Paint
I cannot believe it’s week two of the One Room Challenge! It seems like all I accomplished this week was ordering things for the room at two o’clock in the morning when I was feeding the baby. It’s the little victories. On an exciting note, our slipcovered sectional from Birch Lane was delivered! I was able to keep the dog off of it for all of about two hours but thankfully my fabric swatch selection technique a few weeks ago was successful, and the dog hair is barely visible. What is the super technical and professional tip you might ask? I literally took the swatches and rubbed them on the dog’s back! (Yes, you read that correctly)! It sounds ridiculous but I wanted a light fabric and this “Lizzy Linen” weave, with its variations in fibers from a flax color to touches of deep gray-brown, gives the sectional the versatility to hide both white and black dog hair. When I tell new clients I design for real families I mean it; dog hair and all! Overall we are really enjoying the sofa. We are at the stage of life where we can’t have anything too precious and this cozy slipcovered beauty checks most of our boxes! Here it is in the room, notice this is the only change so far! Yikes!
The major decision of the week, that will hopefully get the ball rolling with the actual transformation of the room, is a final paint color! I had narrowed it down to two colors shown below: Sherwin Williams Silver Strand and Valspar Pale Linen.
And the winner is: Sherwin Williams Silver Strand! Not so fun fact about our house: for some reason the builder decided to paint the trim and the ceilings an off white, almost cream color. This house has a lot of millwork, which I really love, but that means either working with the cream everywhere or changing not only the ceilings but also all the trim work, doors, everything. Because the house is very open it would have to all be done at once. This new Momma does not have the patience for that right now! Can anyone say “ ain’t nobody got time for that!” Eventually, we want to have all the trim and ceilings painting a pure, bright white, but having to move everything and having painters working on the ceiling requires more sanity than I currently have at the moment, not to mention the off-white trim work is newly painted and fresh. The trickiest part of picking a paint color for this house is finding something that works with the off-white, and doesn’t make it look yellow, or darken the room. A lot of colors wouldn't work in here at all. Enter Silver Strand. I knew I wanted the walls to be a very light gray-green that would be a neutral backdrop and work with lots of colors within the room. I loved the Valspar Pale Linen too but I am just concerned it is too close to the trim color and I don't want to lose the contrast that highlights the beautiful arch and moldings in the room.
So that’s where I stand with the room at the moment. Lots of fun packages coming this week and lots of pretty things to show you next week, hopefully including some fresh paint! Tune in next week when I show you all the pretty pillows and textiles that give a room life. It’s going to be a major Pillow Par-tay over here!
